Our History

Born from Sisterhood, Built for Community

Wayside Uplift Initiative was founded by a group of women whose bond began decades ago inside a group home in Valley Stream, N.Y., Wayside Home School for Girls, operated by The Salvation Army. We came from different backgrounds and faced different hardships. Some of us were placed there because we had run into trouble with the law as kids. Others were there because our parents could not care for us, or simply chose not to.

Even in the middle of those challenges, we built a sisterhood. Whether some of us returned home or others remained in care, we stayed connected, supported one another, and carried that bond into adulthood. When Wayside Home School for Girls closed in late 2003, the remaining girls were sent home or transferred to other facilities. Over time, life scattered us, some stayed close, others drifted away, but the love never disappeared.

Years later, we began to notice a painful truth: too many of our sisters were dying alone, struggling in silence, or ending up on the streets with no support system. That was our turning point. A small group of us came together and made a promise, we would not let our sisters, or anyone like us, fall through the cracks again.

Five of us, each now successful in our own careers and businesses, united to build something powerful. Something rooted in love, dignity, and community. Something that honored the sisterhood that saved us. In 2024, we began the work. In March 2025, Wayside Uplift Initiative officially became a registered nonprofit organization.

Since then, our mission has grown far beyond our original circle. Today, we serve girls, women, families, seniors, and youth, anyone in need of support, stability, and compassion. Our impact continues to expand: Over 2,000 family's feed More than 50,000 perishable items distributed Countless lives touched through community events, outreach, and support services And we do it all with love in our hearts, just as we promised.

What began with five founders has now grown into a strong board of nine dedicated women, each committed to uplifting our community and carrying forward the legacy of Wayside. We have hosted numerous events, built partnerships, and created safe spaces where people feel seen, valued, and supported.

Wayside Uplift Initiative is more than a nonprofit, it is a family, a movement, and a living testament to resilience. We are survivors. We are leaders. We are sisters. And now, we are here to uplift every person who needs a hand, a meal, a resource, or simply someone who cares.
